SJS Call for Board Members & Programming Committee Members

We’re growing!  St. John’s Storytelling is looking for board and programming committee members to help us share our stories.

St. John’s Storytelling is expanding! We program group and solo performances, workshop series, professional development, school visits, and community partnerships year round. Our goal is to celebrate storytelling traditions from many cultures, to support new and  experimental approaches, and to foreground the role of stories in shaping social change. Plus, our board  members get to be part of an incredible community of performers, writers, musicians, activists, and  innovators from a wide variety of fields.

About SJS:

St. John’s Storytelling is a not-for-profit organization that has been active in the Storytelling  community of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2004. We host and organize an annual Storytelling  festival bringing storytellers from across the Province, Canada and internationally to the stage in St.  John’s. Our festival and year-round programming includes story walks, group and solo shows, open mics,  workshops and working groups, and events for families and young tellers.

The mandate of St. John’s Storytelling is to promote the art and tradition of storytelling in  Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada; to foster creative expression of this art; and to  promote cooperation among organizations related to the art and tradition of storytelling in  Newfoundland and Labrador.

We are seeking to honor the unique storytelling traditions from this place and cultures around the  world. As we aim to preserve tradition, we also support experimental approaches and new developments  in the medium. Storytelling is an art of unmediated connection, making it uniquely suited to activism and  a great vehicle for social change. Our goals are big. Help us champion them.

About our Board:

Serving on the St. John’s Storytelling Board is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is  passionate about the art of storytelling, and excited about leadership and governance in the nonprofit  sector. The successful applicant will have time to commit to monthly board meetings, planning sessions  and assisting with special events from time to time. We are seeking a team player, someone who listens  well and is thoughtful in considering new ideas. A positive, collaborative attitude is essential to ensure  the continued positive success of the organization.

The SJSF Board of Directors is a volunteer board who maintain hands-on involvement in all the activities  of the organization.

About our Programming Committee

Our programming committee meets regularly to discuss events, workshops, and other exciting possibilities. They review applications from tellers for our annual Festival, and network with local storytellers to ensure we have a strong pool of folks to draw on for our programming.

SJS strives to be an inclusive and safe space for all and is looking to diversify our leadership to reflect  the communities that we serve and to broaden our audiences and performer base. We strongly encourage applications from anyone interested in supporting our aims, and especially from those who are members of marginalized and/or underserved or  underrepresented communities, especially individuals who identify as Indigenous; people of colour; diverse gender and sexual identities (including 2SLGBTQIA+); people living with dis/ability, etc.
