A bit about Shirley:
Shirley Montague was born and raised in North West River, Labrador. Coming from an extended musical family, she claims that music carved her destiny. Though admittedly an arts freelancer, she will say that music has guided most of what she has done in life and that her songs are inspired by real life stories. Shirley’s musical compositions appear on numerous solo and compilation recordings. Her legacy encompasses that of musician, singer, songwriter, producer, festival director and mentor. For example, she has inspired others to embrace self-identity and expression through stories and songs. Shirley is the recipient of numerous awards including HNL’s Cultural Tourism Award, Music NL’s “Denis Parker” Industry Builder Award, ECMA’s “Stompin’ Tom” Unsung Hero Award, The Historic Sites Manning Award and NLFAS Lifetime Achievement Award. Shirley also received an Honorary Doctorate from Memorial University in 2019. While Shirley is recognized and respected as a resource person, she still makes time for music citing that one of her greatest pleasures is sharing and making music with others. Shirley presently lives in the Gros Morne National Park area in the town of Norris Point, NL.
